How Habitica Changed My Life

A frequent question that I get is “how on earth do you manage your time,” with all the freelance projects and personal projects I do. “It just seems impossible to have that much going on, but still have time to spend time with friends,” is another common statement that I get sometimes.

Truth is, I’ve always been kind of proficient when it comes to managing my time and keeping on track with goals and deadlines. But it’s not all me I promise! I always have my bullet journal or planner next to me, it has become my favourite tangible productivity tool. But aside from that, I have recently started used one of my favourite apps again!
Today I want to talk about an amazing App that has been keeping me in check lately, called Habitica! Formerly known as HabitRPG, this app has taken my productivity to a whole new level.

Here are the Coles Notes:

  1. Start a character: There are all kinds of ways you can customize your character, but if you don’t have time, just a basic character avatar will do! This is my current character!

  2. List your habits and dailies: The app will come with a few examples of tasks that you can use, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to just clear all those out and start fresh with your daily habits to track and what not. I personally stretch these a bit and track a bunch of smaller things. (The more you check something off, the more coins you get in a day!) These features really do help with starting to build new habits, or break bad ones! Dailies are good for everyday tasks that you don’t want to keep putting in your to do section! Then just add any other to do list tasks as they come along. I sit down every morning with my BUJO and draft out a game plan from there, but now instead of wasting a page in my notebook, I map out all of my small tasks on this app and check them off as I go. More coins for me!

  3. Set your rewards, use the coins you receive to buy new items or quests:  Obviously there needs to be some kind of compensation for being so amazing, so everytime you do something on your lists you get coins. These coins can be used to buy armor, items that bump up your abilities and other neat things. There are bosses and battles once you get into a party, and these items will totally help with that. A feature that I really like is that you can set it up to give yourself tangible rewards too, like episodes of game of thrones and what not.

  4. Join a party, find some guilds or start a challenge: A great thing to do when you first get started is to find a community of like minded people to quest with. Quests happen within a Party. In order to get into a Party, you need to request or get invited to one, or just start your own, you can find a chat in the tavern full of people looking for members or looking to join a party. You can only be in one party at a time, but you can be in multiple guilds! Guilds are kind of similar to a party but they are more specified interest wise (At least that’s what I have noticed!) There are guilds for people who like bullet journals, guilds for people who like Gilmore girls, guilds for people that reward themselves with anime! It’s all here, and it’s all amazing!

  5. Collect all pets and mounts: Also, while you complete tasks you can find random items. There is no way of controlling it, but these add that addictive collecting aspect that us app-users love. Basically, you can find eggs, potions, and food. Once you have an egg and a potion you can combine them to get a pet. For example, Bear Cub Egg + Cotton Candy Potion = Cotton Candy Bear Cub!There is a huge list of combinations that you need to try to complete! You can feed your pets to train them and boost their stats, but they only eat certain foods. IE. Pink pets can only eat pink food, and brown pets can only eat brown food… and every other colour is the same. It’s simple, but like I said, so addictive. Since the HabitRPG days they have added so many new pets, and I’m completely invested in getting them all.

Overall, I love this app and it really does help make everyday tasks a little more fun. At first, I was worried that it might make productivity a bit distracting, but after I explored a bit, joined my party and settled down, it really is something that I can’t see myself living without now. It is a free app, there is the option to purchase in game currency which, to be honest, I definitely see myself doing in the future (the developers of this app are so amazing so I would love to support them), but you can play without it for sure! Check it out and let me know what you think!

Be Fearlessly Authentic

Oh hey there

Today I want to talk about something I’ve been thinking and reflecting on a lot lately. I, unfortunately, can’t remember the exact situation that got me thinking about it but I want to talk about authenticity. Not in any specific capacity, like in regards to social media, or online personas, though I do think those things are important and I will touch on that, but more so just being your authentic self and focusing on what makes you feel the most you.

Being authentic boils down to knowing who you are, knowing what makes you unique, and not ditching those things just because they might make you different.

I’ve been challenging myself to stay mindful about being authentic on all fronts. For me authenticity means:

  • being up front with myself and with others about what I like and don’t like.
  • asking myself “is that something I really want to do?”
  • not modifying myself to be loved or accepted by others.
  • not editing my life in a way to make myself seem perfect.
  • saying no whenever I god damn feel like it. (+5 points for feeling this sassy!)

I have been listening to all kinds of podcasts and e-books about well being and personal development lately, and one thing that they all have in common is that they all say you need to embrace your true self in order to be truly happy. The number of people I’ve heard talk about how much time they wasted trying to be something they weren’t was so insane, and it kind of shocked me into obsessing about being authentic and whether or not I was wasting my time trying to be someone I’m not.

When it comes to social media or just my online persona, I find that I constantly struggle with this internal conflict or belief that people deserve to know what I’m doing all the time, even when I really don’t feel like sharing something. That can easily be taken in a very conceited way, but I assure you that’s not what I mean. I don’t mean that people want to know what I’m up to, just that I feel like I owe everyone something…for some reason. Maybe that’s just my personality type? Maybe I should look up what my personality type is? (< true revelation just happened right there, actually though, I wrote it down in my BUJO! It’s a thing now!)

So I’ve got a little bit of a plan aside from the list of things above, that is hopefully going to help me be more authentic, help me give less of a fox (see what I did there!? Am I allowed to swear here?), and hopefully help me kick these expectations of perfection when it comes to how I appear to other people.

A while back when that Sarahahahaha.com site was a thing, someone left this comment on my page and it kind of just made me laugh because I really don’t feel that way at all. It may look perfect online because I don’t post the bad parts but my life is most definitely not perfect. Maybe this is what sparked this post topic…. I don’t know. Anyways, I hope that this post wasn’t too rambly or weird. But then again, I’m trying not to care too much about that!

Let me know if you struggle with these kinds of things or feel like you could be a little more authentic too, so I know I’m not alone!

Prep-tember//Asking Why

Oh hey there

I’m super excited about this post, as its the first post to kick off my Preptember Writers Series! This topic has been one that I’ve been pondering for a while now and it all kind of started on our car ride home from vacation. For a while now, my partner and I have been kind of jokingly pulling together this plot of a book that neither of us planned on writing. I want to say that this ongoing joke started in the beginning of our relationship and it’s just been growing and getting more and more ridiculous the more we brought it up. But when we embarked on our 7 hour drive home from Magnetawan we eventually ran out of road trip games to play and we slowly transitioned into talking about our plot idea but in a more serious manner.

The longer we drove, the more real the story seemed; it became something kind of possible, and kind of awesome. So we have kind of decided to collaborate this idea. He isn’t a writer, so I’ll be doing all of that, but his skill with plotting and storyline is kind of remarkable. It really is a gift. Which is kind of what inspired me to write this post about asking yourself or your characters “Why?”

As we went on developing our story, I kept asking him different questions, but most of them were starting with “Why?” Why are they fighting? Why do they need to get there? Why are they running? Why is she alone? Why a giraffe?

Whenever I asked why I was worried that he would get defensive of his story, I was worried that asking why would seem like I was challenging the ideas, but that wasn’t the case. Whenever we asked why we opened up the floor for some of the best reasoning and discussions. The other questions worked but none of them produced conversation like our “Why” questions. I think that asking why is a question that challenges a plot, and as long as it’s yourself or your beta-readers challenging your plot, I think it’s fine. you should be able to defend your plot, but more importantly, you shouldn’t have to.

So as a way to avoid having to answer questions later, answer questions now, while you’re writing, or before you even open that new idea.

What I wish we did was record that discussion, because we would have had 2 hours of the purest plot details and background information that we could possibly get and we might not ever have those true and blatant answers ever again, which is fine, we’ll get there eventually, but it was such an amazing conversation.

Another thing that I learned about myself as a writer while discussing this plot with Drew, was that having a partner or friend to sound board off of, or having someone to ask or answers questions with is SO helpful. If you have a friend that you can confide in and trust your ideas with, I would definitely recommend having a little Q&A!

What is your favourite question to ask yourself or your characters? Do you find asking questions helps you develop your plots, or does it take the fun out of it for you?

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for more Prep-tember posts in the future,

My August Reading List

Oh hey there

This month I’ve decided to pull a post theme from my old bag of tricks! I used to blog about books so often back in university but somewhere along the way reading lost its appeal and writing took the wheel (ughhh accidental poetry?!) So this month I decided that I’m going to share my list of books I’m going to try to finish this month. I’m not going to go into detail about each one, I’ll just put the photo and a link to each of the goodreads pages! Next to each book I’ll eventually put a note when I finish it with the date so that we can keep track of my progress! Okay! Now for the main event! (saying that makes me feel like one of those OG Pokemon trainers…)

1. Sex Criminals: Vol 3SexCriminals_vol3-1

2. Rat Queens: Vol 3

RatQueens_vol03-1

3. Snot Girl

4. How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life

download

5. Milk & Honey

23513349

6. $100 Start Up

12605157

As you can probably tell there is a pretty random mix here. I mean comic books and personal development? Really? Most of the comics I’ll probably read in one day, and then I want to get How to be a Bawse done before I head to the cottage. Milk and Honey will be a great read for sitting on the dock and $100 Start Up will be a pretty constructive read incase it rains or anything while we’re there! Its not the most ambitious list I’ve had but its more than half my current TBR list in my BUJO. The rest is all YA, fiction or Fantasy mostly, which I find sometimes a bit harder to read for some reason, I really need to figure why that is… probably has something to do with going to university for English Lit though.

I’ll keep this post updated as well as post on instagram when I complete each book! Please feel free to comment below if you’ve read any of these and let me know what you thought of them! No spoilers please!

Thanks for reading, have a nifty day!

Where Do We Go From Here?

(I’m feeling this)
(( What song is this referencing!? Post your answer in the comments ))

Oh hey there

Its been a few seconds since we spoke last, but July was a super hectic and disorganized month. I found myself barely using my bullet journal, which I think created some funky anxiety but overall, the chaos that was last month has mainly been all positive. Its been exactly a month since the love of my life and I moved in with each other, I got to see one of my favourite bands, Violent Femmes, and it’s been a week and a half since we got our new kitten, Sushi. The rest is about a 50/50 split of negative and positive things that aren’t exactly worth getting into. Without delving too far into the details of the situation, I’m just going to keep it super short and simple:

I am currently 100% self-employed

I am no longer working at that vintage clothing store that I mentioned in my first post. Its definitely more of a positive thing than a negative, and though it feels pretty scary right now, I know this was the push that I needed to go fully self-employed. I can’t help but feel a little nervous, this it the first time in my life that I haven’t had a boss or someone to make sure I’m doing the right thing. I have a career coach but its just not the same thing. I guess its just easy to fall into this mindset that freelancing isn’t real work. Its super easy to feel aimless when there is no one sitting there telling you what to do.

And then on the other hand I’m pretty thrilled that I don’t have to report to anyone other than my clients and myself. I’m looking forward to not being anxious about my workplace, and I’m looking forward to a rewarding career where I can learn and grow my business and still have time for my hobbies, loved ones and social life. I’m excited to have time for all my personal goals, as you can see here I laid out my August monthly goal sheet before the career change so I’m going to be making another spread of all my business goals.

20448987_10155329576651013_8782099293528784885_o

With all of this being said, I really need to buckle down and get myself organized so that I can get more new clients in, and not just on a friend of a friend basis. I need to branch out more online and find more long term clients, so I’m going to be incorporating my portfolio and some of my work into this website. If you like any of what you see, like my custom greetings, signatures, pinterest or social media graphics or anything please let me know by contacting me through this site or by emailing me! I’m always looking to make new connections!

So ending on a positive note, I know I’m going to be fine, in fact, I’m going to be so much better than fine! The initial loss was a little defeating but I’m not going to let it ruin my stride! So I’m going to take a little bit of down time, write up a business plan, work on my portfolio, and just find my groove. I have a mini vacation planned near the end of August and I’m hoping that before I leave for that I’ll have everything set in place to really start taking this career seriously.

Not to mention I’m also going to take some time to get to know this new little kitten! This is Sushi, the newest and most naked edition to our family! He’s 4 months and he’s absolutely insane!

Navi and him have really connected yet, it was a super rough start, but they are getting better each day. Here’s a silly photo of them seperated by our duvet!
